Ceiling Fan Installation Cost

How Much Does it Cost to Install a Ceiling Fan?

Installing a ceiling fan can be very affordable; however, there are several factors that may impact the total cost of your project. The average cost of ceiling fan installation is about $291 per fan. This estimated price includes the cost of a mid-grade ceiling fan and professional installation.

1. Regional cost differences. The cost of living in your area will impact the cost of installation. Expect to pay more in big cities like New York and Los Angeles.

2. Replacement vs. new installation. Are you replacing an existing ceiling fan or light fixture? Will the new fan fit where the old one once fit? You may need to pay extra for 1) the removal of the existing fixture or 2) any drywall repairs.

3. Electrical work. Is the correct electrical wiring in place? Ceiling fans often require a special electrical box. Any complex electrical work will increase the cost of installation.

4. Have you already purchased the ceiling fan? If you purchase the ceiling fan yourself, you may be able to save a few dollars.

5. Type of ceiling fan. There are so many different types of ceiling fans. Basic white ceiling fans will be much more affordable than high-end fans with wooden blades and brushed nickel finishes. Wet-rated, outdoor ceiling fans and commercial-grade ceiling fans will also be more expensive.

6. Ceiling height. It is more expensive to install ceiling fans on higher ceilings (over 10 ft). This may require a special ladder or the rental of a lift. You may also need to install the fan with a downrod (or downrod extension).

7. Fan size. Can the ceiling support the weight of the ceiling fan? Any reinforcement will come at an additional cost. Additionally, is the fan the appropriate size for the square footage of the room? While a 30-inch fan works well in a small bedroom, a 40-50 inch fan is a better option for a large great room.

8. Fan motor. Ceiling fans with AC motors are cheaper than ceilings fans with DC motors. Ceiling fans with multiple speeds may also be slightly more expensive.

9. Wall switch. Will the fan be turned on and off with a switch? This may add to the cost of your project. Also, fans with remote controls may also be more expensive.

10. Get several cost estimates. Don't settle for the first installer that you stumble upon. Make sure to get several estimates that you compare. ProMatcher can help! Always verify that the contractor is properly licensed and insured.
